ProgrammeIdeaWhile observing national and international quality standards, Pharmaceutical Medicine deals with the discovery, research and development of medical products and medical devices. In addition, it is engaged in benefit/risk-assessment, approval, marketing and monitoring of drugs and biotechnological products. Due to this complex requirements the health institutions as well as the pharmaceutical industry need highly qualified employees. About the course The study course "Pharmaceutical Medicine" found general recognition in October 2005 after years of development and proving its worth:

Target audienceEducational objectiveThe objective of this study course is to focus on day-to-day practice, to promote interdisciplinary knowledge and to enable the participants to deal with the complex international tasks facing health care institutions and the pharmaceutical industry. Students With approximately one third, physicans form the largest group among the students, followed by biologists and pharmacists. The number of females and males is balanced. One half of the participants have already obtained a doctorate, 50 percent of the students have working experience in the pharmaceutical industry. 90 percent make a career step or enter employment during the two years of studing. |

Emphases/CurriculumCourse StructureThe study course covers two years and is divided into 3 modules with different numbers of study units, taught in block seminars on Thursday afternoon, Friday and Saturday at the University Duisburg-Essen. Each study unit concludes with an examination. After 18 study units, a time period for thesis preparation and oral examination follows. The study course can be conducted while the participant is working. Study Units Each of the following topics will be taught in Study Units:
During the study course the student will be examined after each study unit. This test will determine whether the student has acquired the knowledge and understanding from the previous study unit(s). The form of the test will be at the decision of the head lecturer within the relevant study unit after agreement with the examination board. The students will receive a certificate with their grading after every study unit. In order to obtain the degree Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Medicine the students must write a master thesis and pass the oral examination. The final grade is made from the grades of the oral examination, the thesis and the average of the grades out of the 18 study units, each to one third. |
Practical relevanceLecturesLectures represent about 50 companies and institutions in the health care system. They are leading experts in different areas of competence. 20 percent are from other countries such as Austria, Belgium, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Switzerland and the USA. Most of the lectures are employed in the pharmaceutical industry. |

It is located in the center of a region with the highest number of universities in Europe and is one of the biggest in the country. About 30,000 students are registered. PME Institute for Education in Pharmaceutical Medicine PME has the obligation to offer a comprehensive learning package, combining a university’s hands-on oriented education with an innovative, on-the-job professional training. The institute is responsible for the organization and the realization of the study course units. It is the central interface which builds the connecting link for all involved persons. |
