Target audience

The Master's program in Microsystems Engineering is designed for highly qualified graduate students holding a Bachelor's degree in engineering or science.

MEMS is an exciting engineering discipline which combines expertise from areas as diverse as electrical engineering, biology, manufacturing technology and chemistry and thus allows engineers to:

conceive highly miniaturized,
multi-functional systems with capabilities limited only by the imagination,
Retinal implants to help the blind to see,
a clinical blood analysis laboratory on a micro-chip or
autonomous optical systems for imaging inside the body

and these are just a few examples of the roles microsystems will play in our lives.

Practical relevance

This program is given 100 % in English. Our faculty members as well as our students come from all over the world and create an international atmosphere that strengthens the inter-cultural skills of the students.

In the second year, students are required to write a one-year Master's thesis, based on project work performed directly in a professor's research group, thus giving the graduate extensive, hands-on experience using state-of-the-art microsystems infrastructure.

IMTEK

The Institute of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK) at the University of Freiburg was founded in 1995. It features modern facilities for research and teaching including a cleanroom, electronics, optics and chemistry laboratories, robotics laboratories and mobile computer pools for students.

The professors at IMTEK strive to give you the best teaching and personal counselling possible. Students are perceived as individual human beings and not as ID numbers. Each MSE student will be assigned a faculty member as his mentor.

In October 2007 the University of Freiburg was selected by the German government to become one out of 9 "excellence universities". This demonstrates its top position among German universities, also documented in nationwide rankings.

Besides its excellence in research and teaching, the scholarly diversity is above all what attracts so many students to Freiburg`s Alma Mater. The University of Freiburg consists of 11 Faculties, which offer degree programmes in theology, mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, pharmacy, geo sciences, forestry, computer science and microsystems engineering. The university library holds more than two million volumes as well as multimedia facilities.

All students have the opportunity to join the General University Sports Association, which offers 35 different kinds of sports.
