Programme

The Master Online (MSc) and the new offered Postgraduate Study Tracks in Advanced Physical Methods in Radiotherapy (APMR) are accredited distance learning, postgraduate study programs on the cusp of relevant therapeutic developments such as IGRT, IMRT and proton and heavy ion therapy. Designed to provide work based training on location in Heidelberg it contributes directly to the improvement of patient care. A large part of the program is delivered predominantly online (80%). Practical training will take place in Heidelberg at the widely acclaimed German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the distinguished Heidelberg University Hospital and the new state-of-the-art heavy Ion-Beam Therapy Center(HIT).

If you are interested in the new Master program or the new offered Postgraduate Study Tracks, please take a look at our website http://www.apmr.uni-hd.de.

Admission/Entrance requirements

Fees:

Master Online (MSc): The fee for the regular 4 semester program is € 16,426 (from October, 2011).

Postgraduate Study Tracks: € 2,500 to € 2,600 per module

Entry Requirements - General:

- Degree of higher or further education institute (Bachelor, Diploma, Master)
- Proof of two years of professional experience following the first degree or proof of an employment contract for a minimum of two years before APMR program start
- Competency in medical physics subject to scrutiny by submission panel

New Postgraduate Study Track Options

In response to popular demand, there are now two postgraduate study tracks on offer in addition to the regular Master Online MSc track in Advanced Physical Methods in Radiotherapy:

The Postgraduate short study (30 ECTS) and Postgraduate full study (60 ECTS) track

Postgraduate short study track

Two core modules and one custom-picked module make up the Postgraduate short study track. The core modules are mandatory. They are:
- Module 2 Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy
- Module 4 Image Guided Radiotherapy and Adaptive Radiotherapy
The third module is then chosen on an individual basis from the following three modules:
- Module 1 Anatomy and Imaging for Radiotherapy
- Module 3 Ion Therapy
- Module 5 Advanced Dosimetry and Quality Assurance
Regardless of the module combination the Postgraduate short study track can be completed in one year including the attendance phases.

The three modules may be taken in any order.

Postgraduate full study track

The Postgraduate full study track entails all six taught modules that comprise the MO APMR program prior to the Masters dissertation.

Module P which is not listed above is the MP Internships module which sees students on site in Heidelberg for 12 days where each student completes 4 out of 5 available practical internships at the medical facilities DKFZ, HIT or Heidelberg University Hospital.

The Postgraduate full study track can be completed in 1.5 years.

Study in Heidelberg

Radiotherapy in Heidelberg has a long tradition of excellence.
The great surgeon and radiotherapist Vinzenz Czerny (1842 -
1916) of Heidelberg was one of the first physicians to recognize
the significance of interdisciplinary cancer treatment. He established
the “Samariterhaus” which combined treatment and
research under one roof in addition to the “Institute for Experimental
Cancer Research”. From this emerged the “three pillars”
of cancer therapy in Heidelberg:
- The clinic for Radiation Oncology and Radiation Therapy
at Heidelberg University Hospital
- The National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT)
- The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ)
These centers are testament to Heidelberg’s top international
position in therapy, research and science. In this setting it is not
surprising that key developments in radiotherapy stem from the
Heidelberg facilities each in turn setting new international quality
standards in oncology radiotherapy.
With the launch of “The Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Center”
(HIT) in 2009 a fourth unique cancer treatment center supplements
the esteemed earlier facilities.
With HIT new hope for recovery has been given to many patients
with tumors previously difficult to treat in conventional
radiotherapy.
