Programme

The increasing globally connected nature of modern business brings with it new challenges to be addressed and new opportunities to be seized by managers with expert leadership and communication competence. The programme enables you to combine communication and leadership skills to transform multicultural situations, in which various cultures simply coexist, or possibly clash, into intercultural ones characterized by mutual respect and reciprocal enhancement.

Via the advanced study of organisations, the dynamic external context in which they operate and how they are managed you attain an integrated and critically aware understanding of how leadership and communication interact. You are provided with the opportunity to develop foreign language skills and inter- cultural competence.

Complementary regional studies impart to you the culture-related knowledge and competence necessary to operate effectively in intercultural and multicultural business contexts. They also enable you to anticipate and recognise the need for change, take an active role in change processes and to manage change.

Target audience

The overall objective of the programme is to equip you with the leadership and communication tools to handle the challenges and exploit the opportunities presented by international business. The Academy places particular emphasis on preparing you for your future career.

They enable you to develop international leadership and communications competence so that as a manager you can succeed in an international and intercultural environment characterized by contrasting and possibly conflicting leadership, communication and working behaviours.

Emphases/Curriculum

The first three semesters are lectures, seminars etc. while the fourth semester is reserved for writing the Master’s Dissertation. It comprises 4 thematic strands plus an elective element.

CORE PROGRAMME:

The first two strands - Research and Theory & Reflection - develop investigative skills and provide theoretical frameworks that enable you to recognize and understand leadership and communication issues in international business contexts, and to reflect on the consequences for management practice.

The third strand - Management Practice - aims to promote your critical understanding of management techniques and tools that can be employed to develop sophisticated and situationally-appropriate solutions to the problems encountered in inter- national and intercultural business, and of the problems and risks associated with their use.

The fourth strand - Intercultural Competence - centres on an in-depth investigation of the business-relevant specifics of three dynamic and emerging regions: East Asia, Middle East, and Latin America. Economically, they have developed very rapidly to become major players in the world economy. As such they are very interesting as markets but also as regions where Western companies locate, or which are producing a highly-qualified workforce and their own market-leading companies.

ELECTIVE MODULES: Students select 3 of the following Elective Modules:
  • International Human Resources Management
  • Effective Communication through Special Events
  • Marketing Across Cultures
  • Public relations and new media / Corporate and Specialist PR
  • Intercultural Corporate Citizenship
MASTER THESIS:

In the fourth semester you write a dissertation in which you will be able to carry out in-depth research on a specific programme-related topic of your interest. You may investigate an issue or problem related to your own work-place, or undertake a more theoretical investigation. There is no formal teaching during this semester and no attendance requirement. You can thus use this semester to gain work experience or study abroad without extending the duration of your studies.

Organisation

Expertise and experience in vocational training are the hallmarks of Heidelberg International Business Academy. For over 60 years now, we have been preparing our students for careers in international service professions: the first vocational college at the Academy received state recognition as early as 1948.

There are very few private establishments with such a long history of experience and endorsement. Today, Heidelberg International Business Academy is a business school with an international study programme modelled along British lines that leads to the degree-level award of Bachelor of Arts (Honours).

Regardless of whether you study International Business Manage- ment, Tourism Management, Events Management, Marketing and Media or Cultural Management at HIB: since our foundation we have remained true to the principle of offering an alternative to the overcrowded mass universities along with a personal setting for your course of study in Heidelberg.

Study in Heidelberg

From Philosopher's Way, said by connoisseurs of Heidelberg to be the most beautiful promenade in Europe, you gaze down at the Neckar River, with the Old Bridge and the picturesque Old Town reflected in its waters. The narrow lanes of the Old Town, with its countless restaurants, bistros, bars and cafés invite you to linger for a while. This is here where the nightlife is at. Towering majestically above are the mystical castle ruins.

In the summer the inner courtyard provides the venue for the Castle Festival, and guests from all over the world marvel at the famous Castle Illuminations. The small weekly farmers' markets, the zoo and the botanical garden, the funicular railway up to the Königstuhl, the colourful toing and froing of the pedalos on the Neckar along with the rowing and sailing boats passing in front of the park-like river meadows … it is this diversity that makes this city so varied and vibrant and the ideal location for your studies in Germany.

The university, its affiliated institutes and a whole series of major companies shape Heidelberg's worldwide reputation for combining science and technology with the tradition of a romantic student city. Heidelberg offers you a stimulating cultural environment while you study in Germany. The city is located in the Rhein-Neckar Triangle, about 20 km from Mannheim, 80 km from Frankfurt and 100 km from Stuttgart. Tram and bus stops are just a few minutes' walk away from HIB.
