Programme

Water resources, indispensable basis for development, food and health, become ever scarcer and more polluted. The concept of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) offers solutions to the water crisis by connecting water to other vital resources. Accordingly, IWRM regards the whole water cycle together with human interventions as the basis for sustainable water management. As it is a relatively new concept, there is a high demand for experts adequately trained in the concept of IWRM. Next to the technical and managerial skills related to water resources these experts also require knowledge of project funding and international cooperation.

In particular for bilateral projects between Germany and Arab countries there is a need for experts who are skilled in intercultural communication, being familiar with the culture, language and politics of both sides. The MSc »IWRM« has the objective to equip such experts with the necessary knowledge and skills and to promote the concept of IWRM in the context of German-Arab cooperation.“We, the Amman-Cologne School of IWRM, empower professionals to manage water systems sustainably."

The bicultural master program IWRM is conducted by Cologne University of Applied Sciences (CUAS) and the University of Jordan (UJ), with primary responsibility on the Institute for Technology and Resources Management in the Tropics and Subtropics (ITT) in Cologne and the Water and Environment Research and Study Center (WERSC) in Amman.

    Practical relevance

    Team projects
The team project is a core part of the master programme. In the team project, students have the chance to apply their knowledge gained within the basic and specialized modules in the frame of an interdisciplinary case study.

Each team consists of at least 2 Arab and 2 German participants. The team projects are related to ongoing projects in the water sector carried out by partners of the IWRM network.

    Field visits
Likewise, field visits play an important role for the programme as the exposure to ongoing projects of development assistance or private enterprises in Arab countries and to relevant institutions is of highest importance in order to meet the objectives of the programme.

The preparation of field trips includes research on the objectives of the visited projects, their relevance to tackle substantial water resources problems in the region, their financial background, their institutional embedding, their prospects and sustainability. The participants will visit various ongoing projects. Having researched the project backgrounds, they are prepared to speak with the project staff and partners to receive insights into the project. Field trips conclude with discussion and analysis of the projects visited. Experiences collected here will help the students to decide on a team project.

    Organisation

The changing conditions of a globalized world require flexibility and high quality in both teaching and research in higher education. The expansion of international scientific-technical cooperation is the appropriate answer to this challenge.

The Institute for Technology and Resources Management in the Tropics and Subtropics (ITT) promotes this process by providing instruction, research and technology transfer services. The ITT sees itself as an interdisciplinary, intercultural and international interface with the goal of enabling people of varying technical and cultural backgrounds the capacity for wide ranging cooperation and to promote cooperation at the university and post-graduate level. Via interdisciplinary courses and applied research in cooperation with partners in both Germany and throughout the world the ITT meets these goals.

The Water & Environment research and Study Center WERSC of the University of Jordan was established in 1982. WERSC is an independent unit that is directly linked to the university president. A board of directors that consists of eleven members chosen by the council of deans, from inside and out side the university supervises the center's functions and budget and evaluates its performance. The center plays a leading role in developing and implementing national plans to develop and manage Jordan's water resources.

The center directs its activities to irrigation management, low cost wastewater treatment, reuse of treated wastewater in irrigation, water hydrology, water conservation in arid areas, water quality, water harvesting and artificial recharge.
