ProgrammeThe rapid development of micro-processor technology and the continuous growth of integration density of electronic and mechatronic components has yielded a significant cost reduction of high tech products. Due to this development, it has become feasible to embed devices for information processing or communication into all sorts of appliances. For example, we find them in production facilities, traffic and transport systems, mobile and service robots and high tech toys. In future, a growing number of these devices will be embedded into complex mechatronic systems, in production environments as well as in our everyday life. They tend to become invisible behind the system's functionality yet they occupy a rapidly growing market share. The dynamic nature of this field of operations demands flexibility and adaptability. Well-established control paradigms and architectures fall short of adequately realizing the full potential of these technologies, nor are they sufficient to master the growing complexity of these systems. One solution is to design selected components as 'autonomous systems' which can act mainly by themselves without continuous external control. In this context, autonomous robots and mobile manipulators form the forefront of recent developments. In the Master's Program 'Autonomous Systems' (MAS) students will learn the practical skills and intellectual abilities necessary for the design and development of such autonomous systems. This Master's Program takes the form of a "Master by Research". So a large part of the program consists of direct participation in research and development projects. We offer a stimulating and challenging experience in an international and interdisciplinary learning environment to ambitious individuals who show an extraordinary level of commitment, selfinitiative, and self-responsibility. If this is the kind of experience you are looking for, we look forward to meeting you in person. Prof. Dr. Kurt-Ulrich Witt Dean |
Target audienceThe goal of this course of studies is to provide students with an initial university degree the opportunity to learn scientifically founded concepts, methods, and techniques to enable them to both develop these further and to apply them towards the solution of practical problems. The focus of the course of studies is on questions and the principles of the design of distributed, interacting autonomous systems. Emphases/CurriculumThe master's degree program covers four semesters, including additional project work in the semester breaks. The content of the 2nd and 3rd semesters is directed at topics in research and development. The fourth semester is used to write the master's thesis. Each semester includes work in research and development projects, which must be presented and documented in a report, and attendance in courses, also directed at research and development courses. Examinations and proof of academic achievement take place during the studies. Covered topic include, but are not restricted to:

Practical relevanceThe master's degree program is of the type master by research. This means that a large portion of the program, including the preparation of the master's thesis, involves research and development projects.R&D Projects A continuous project contract at the Fraunhofer Institute IAIS or another approved institution gives students the opportunity to actively participate in and profit from current research and development work. It runs in parallel to the course work and covers half of the total ECTS. |
